Homage to Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic
This comic pays homage to the book Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic through the use of irony. Fun Home is about a seemingly typical family living in Pennsylvania that actually struggles with many private issues, such as sexual orientation, sexual identity, and death. The most blatant example of irony is found in the title of the comic. The home of the Bechdel family is anything but fun—rather, it is a funeral home, a morbid place. In Fun Home, Alison, a lesbian, ironically tries to understand her gay father. The masculine role of the family is switched causing tension and misunderstanding.
Although my comic is nowhere near as melancholy as that of Fun Home, there is irony in my work. In my comic, I try to impress a boy but by trying too hard, I only embarrass myself and act as a fool. Unlike Fun Home, the gender identity and orientation of my character are clearly defined by my actions. This homage of irony and gender is simple, yet relates to the entire story of Bechdel’s family tragicomic.
